A lovely writing metaphor was used by Jean to further explain again the idea of repetition by repeating the same thing over and over againin a lesson to be sure the students get it.
Since it is April, poetry month, a Shakespeare sonnet is another perfect example. He uses the three quatrains to say the same thing three different ways, so as to reach his audience. Guess how he uses the concluding rhyming couplet? Yup to say it yet again.
SONNET 1
William ShakespeareFrom fairest creatures we desire increase,
That thereby beauty's rose might never die,
But as the riper should by time decease,
His tender heir might bear his memory:
But thou, contracted to thine own bright eyes,
Feed'st thy light's flame with self-substantial fuel,
Making a famine where abundance lies,
Thyself thy foe, to thy sweet self too cruel.
Thou that art now the world's fresh ornament
And only herald to the gaudy spring,
Within thine own bud buriest thy content
And, tender churl, makest waste in niggarding.
Pity the world, or else this glutton be,
To eat the world's due, by the grave and thee.

Jean was reflecting on our conversation with Mike, last Monday. A key phrase emerged for her: Specific Actionable Feedback.
What words, directions, can we give to influence student work? It is all about the Classroom Teachers need SAF, too; so using the student model of student to student interaction in class, Jean would like teachers to pair up and visit each other's class, for pay, to provide feedback about classroom practice. It requires a safe learning environment, when it can be done, and how it will be documented is to be worked out. It will require sharing, collaboration, and team work. This will be further discussed and the details will be established before it all happens.

Morning exercise is good, Star Wars could be bad.
Discussion about the progress of our Inquiry Groups.
Social Studies: We looked at the data and decided in Global and US History the weakest part was the thematic essay (Discuss the concept of foreign policy in 20th century US) this is indimidating to students because they have to bring info to the essay.
English: We have a new exam this January, one day on Jan 11. It is a crunched up exam, one essay and 2 short answers with lots of multiple choice. We concentrated on inference as key in solving problems and in improving comprehension to improve essays.
Math: broke into 2 camps. 1.) Students don't study so the question was "Do they know how to study and to take notes. Started with flashcards and then allowing ten minutes before each test and quiz to study notes. 2.)Discussed the problems that give them problems. The multi step problem and literacy were hindrances. Working with word walls to manage decoding.
